Erik Ten Hag and his squad needed a reset with the international break, and they got one. The Red Devils looked refreshed and energized in a dominant, yet tight, win over Brentford.
Despite more shots and possession for United, Brentford entered the half with the lead. Matthijs De Ligt had a gash on his head from an incident earlier on, and a reopening of the wound forced him off in the final minute of first-half stoppage time. In that minute, Ethan Pinnock headed home against a depleted Manchester United corner-kick defense.
Down 1-0 at halftime, it looked like another missed opportunity for Manchester United. However, Erik Ten Hag’s side was ready to respond in the second half.
Two minutes after the break, Alejandro Garnacho latched onto a cross from Marcus Rashford to level the match. The Argentine was a deserved scorer, as he had been United’s most dangerous player through the first half.
Fifteen minutes later, Rasmus Hojlund opened his account for the season with a beautiful clipped finish. The Dane ran onto a flick from Bruno Fernandes and scored to complete the comeback.
Manchester United not only dominated possession and attempts but finally scored the two goals to get the win. While far too many opportunities went begging, the attack showed real promise today to renew hope in Erik Ten Hag’s team.
Manchester United can keep building momentum with a win in Istanbul over Fenerbahçe on Thursday.
