Manchester United, who currently sit 14th, are creeping up on possible FFP violations. The Reds have spent relentlessly attempting to turn around the club’s fortunes on the field. Unfortunately, the lack of Champions League football next season could prove costly, and United are weighing up options to raise funds.
According to the Daily Star, Harry Maguire is one player the club could offload to ease the financial tension. The report from the Star says that Erik Ten Hag has deemed the former captain a “surplus to requirements,” and he could be available for as low as €10m.
While financial reasons may be valid, Maguire has shown his quality and importance to the club this season. If not for Maguire, United would have only a point in the Europa League, and his performances spelling the underperforming Matthijs De Ligt have been impressive.
A difficult pill to swallow for Manchester United, should Harry Maguire be sold, is that he could have earned the club around €30m over the summer. That loss of €20m due to prior indecision would cause fans to question the reasoning for keeping him in the first place.
Maguire is certainly not a perfect center back, but would United be better off selling players like Victor Lindelof, Antony, or Mason Mount should an interested club come forward?
