Manchester United sold Alvarvo Carreras to Benfica for a measly €6 million fee earlier this year. Now needing a left back for the future, United, along with Real Madrid and Barcelona, are interested in the Spaniard.

Portuguese outlet O Jogo reported the two Spanish clubs’ intrigue, along with United’s buy-back interest.

When Manchester United allowed Carreras to leave, club officials ensured that United controlled the left-back’s future. According to The Peoples Person, Manchester United holds a buy-back clause, matching rights, and a sell-on clause. So, even if United officials decide not to pursue a Carreras return, the club will still receive money from the sell-on clause.

Alvaro Carreras moved from Real Madrid to Manchester United in 2020 on a free transfer. Despite showing clear ability and improvement, he never appeared in Manchester Red as he was loaned out to Preston North End, Granada CF, and Benfica. The final loan to the Portuguese giants turned permanent as the loan option was triggered.

Now, nine matches into his full Benfica career, Carreras is attracting major clubs due to his performances. The Spaniard has featured in seven Liga Portugal matches and played 90 minutes in both Champions League wins, including the 4-0 thrashing of Atletico Madrid.

Manchester United have started every match without a true left back so far this season. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia’s long-term injuries meant Noussair Mazraoui played on the right, with Diogo Dalot on the left. Despite impressing in preseason, Harry Amass has not made his full debut for United.

The Reds need a long-term solution on the left side of defense. Should Manchester United bring Alvaro Carreras back to Old Trafford or earn profit from his sell-on clause?
