While the performance on the field was improved, Manchester United’s 0-0 draw against Aston Villa secured the club’s worst start in Premier League history.
A loss against Tottenham, paired with a near-disaster midweek, placed massive pressure on Erik Ten Hag and his team heading to Aston Villa.
Manchester United were solid in the first half, with Jonny Evans and Harry Maguire keeping Villa from a shot on target. Both of United’s shots were on target, though neither truly tested Emi Martinez.
Aston Villa’s jump-and-scream tactic earned three yellow cards for the Reds despite the home side committing more fouls in the half.
The Villans had more of the ball in the second half, though it was United who forced more saves. Unai Emery’s attackers were wasteful in the final third, only getting one of their ten shots on target. For once, the introduction of Jhon Duran did not lead to the winning goal for Villa.
A draw is better than a loss, but eight points in seven matches will do nothing to pacify a fanbase that has lost patience with the manager.
The international break could prove pivotal for Erik Ten Hag. His team will either reset and fix the issues, or the manager will be gone by Christmas.
Manchester United host Brentford after the break before traveling to face Jose Mourinho and Fred at Fenerbahçe in the Europa League.
