Home has not been a refuge for Manchester United so far this season. The Reds have struggled in front of their fans, and that continued today against Spurs. Three goals for Tottenham and a red card for Bruno Fernandes doomed United to a third Premier League loss in six matches.
Match Flow
Tottenham grabbed an early lead inside three minutes. A miscommunication between Marcus Rashford and Alejandro Garnacho allowed Micky Van de Ven to intercept near midfield. The Dutch centerback then drove straight through the United midfield and backline and found an unmarked Brennan Johnson at the back post for a tap-in.
Johnson nearly had a second in the 20th minute when his shot hit the post after beating Onana.
United hit the post next as a Garnacho volley smashed the woodwork from a delectable Rashford cross.
A Bruno slip in the 42nd minute led to a high boot and questionable red card for the United captain. Yes, the challenge was high, but height is not the only factor in a sending-off offense.
With the red, Erik Ten Hag’s side went into the half a man and a goal down.
Spurs made the extra man count quickly after the break. Dejan Kulusevski flicked past Onana after a deflection to give the away side a critical 2-0 lead.
After a positive spell from United, Tottenham finished the deal with a goal off a corner from Dominic Solanke. The Reds could not make the most of their ascendancy and paid the price with a final goal from the visitors.
Looking Ahead
Manchester United’s poor Premier League start continued in another home loss. United has now hosted Liverpool and Tottenham and lost both 0-3.
FC Porto awaits Manchester United in the Europa League on Thursday before the Reds travel to Aston Villa next weekend.
