Former Manchester United center-back Raphael Varane announced his retirement after sustaining a knee injury in his Como debut.

The former World Cup winner posted his retirement message on Instagram.

“They say all good things must come to an end.”

“In my career I have taken on many challenges, rose to occasion after occasion, almost all of it was supposed to be impossible. Incredible emotions, special moments and memories that will last a lifetime. Reflecting on these moments, it is with immense pride and a feeling of fulfillment that I am announcing my retirement from the game that we all love.”

Varane spent three injury-riddled seasons at Old Trafford before leaving the club on a free transfer this summer. He played ninety-five times for United in all competitions, helping lead the team to a League Cup title and an FA Cup title. He tallied two goals and an assist in his sixty-eight Premier League appearances.

Before his move to Old Trafford, Varane established himself as a legend of the game, winning a World Cup with France and claiming four Champions League titles alongside current Red Casemiro with Real Madrid. He formed a formidable partnership with Sergio Ramos that shut down opposition attacks with ease.

In response to Raphael Varane’s post, Manchester United posted, “You represented our colours with great distinction during your three seasons at Old Trafford. We thank you for your leadership, humility and commitment. May these qualities serve you well in your next venture. Once a Red, always a Red.”

Varane will transition to a non-playing role at Como, which has yet to be defined. He has a ton of experience to share, and his leadership qualities will make him an excellent piece for any coaching staff.

Congratulations Rapha on a wonderful career! All United fans are behind you as you move forward with your career off the field!
