A historic day for Manchester United meant historic performances for several players. Who stood out the most in Manchester United’s 7-0 victory?
Starting Eleven
Altay Bayindir: 7 – Bayindir had little to do as Barnsley failed to register a shot on target. He will be happy with the clean sheet in his first appearance of the season.
Diogo Dalot: 6 – Dalot had a comfortable day on his more natural right side. He was barely required in a defensive capacity and finished with a 93% passing accuracy.
Harry Maguire: 7 – Maguire played a full 90 minutes and had a solid outing. He disrupted Barnsley’s attacks with four interceptions and was a main factor in the clean sheet.
Casemiro: 7 – Casemiro rebounded nicely after his nightmare against Liverpool. With a slower-paced match, he controlled the midfield and was a creator going forward, with one key pass and seven long balls. Hopefully, this reset can allow him to return to form.
Jonny Evans: 6 – Evans was quiet but effective. He had less to do defensively than Maguire, with two tackles, a block, and a clearance, but he was also a calming force in the back. He will continue to step in with confidence when players need rest.
Toby Collyer: 6 – Collyer struggled with containing and fouling his man out wide at times, but also had four tackles and four interceptions at left-back. Overall, he was solid while playing out of his natural center minefield position.
Manuel Ugarte: 6 – Ugarte is a fantastic player, but he still needs to get up to speed. He committed six fouls against lesser competition and will need to be smarter in his tackling. He showed flashes of what he will bring when he is ready, though.
Christian Eriksen: 10 – Eriksen was one of two Manchester United players with two goals and two assists. The 32-year-old used the space afforded to him well and was the creative driver for the Reds.
Antony: 8 – Antony returned to the scoresheet after winning, and scoring, a penalty. For a man who has not played often, the strike was confident. If he can find form he will be a real weapon off the bench.
Marcus Rashford: 9 – Rashford was nearly flawless with two goals from the striker position. His goal against Southampton seems to have flipped a switch. Can he continue against Crystal Palace on Saturday?
Alejandro Garnacho: 10 – The other United player with two goals and two assists. Need I say more?
Substitutes
Joshua Zirkzee: 6 – Zirkzee came on late and while it would have been a boost to have found the net, the game was long over by the time he arrived on the pitch.
Amad Diallo: NR – Amad came on too late to rate as he spelled Garnacho for the final few minutes.
Matthijs De Ligt: NR – After his Man of the Match performance at the weekend, De Ligt was a late substitute for Jonny Evans. He completed ten of eleven passes and completed one long ball in twelve minutes.
Noussair Mazraoui: 7 – Mazraoui came in and pushed high. He contributed with three key passes and a tackle. He will likely return to the starting eleven on Saturday.
Bruno Fernandes: 8 – Fernandes came on and assisted both of Christian Eriksen’s late goals. In just twenty-eight minutes, the Portuguese playmaker contributed six key passes.
Man of the Match: Alejandro Garnacho
