Manchester United will kick off the Carabao Cup campaign by hosting Barnsley, who currently sit 7th in League One.
The match at Old Trafford will come three days after the Reds claimed an important and emphatic win away at Southampton. Due to the nature of the game, Erik Ten Hag will likely opt for a reserve-heavy side, providing younger and second-team players a chance to start.
At goalkeeper, Andre Onana should be given a rest, allowing a rare start for Turkish international Altay Bayindir.
Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs De Ligt went off late at Southampton with what are hopefully minor knocks. Neither should be risked, and Harry Maguire and Jonny Evans can fill the heart of the defense.
With no other options, Dalot may be forced to play right-back, while Harry Amass deserves a chance to start against lower competition.
Recently benched Casemiro will likely start to give experience to the midfield and could be joined by Toby Collyer. Dan Gore is also an option.
With Mason Mount still on the sidelines due to injury, one of Bruno Fernandes or Christian Eriksen will fill the number ten role. Captain Fernandes will likely fill that position, as Ten Hag typically keeps him in the side for cup matches.
Up top, Ethan Wheatley could receive a surprise start, though Ten Hag may still opt for Zirkzee or Rashford. Antony should be given a chance to spell Amad, while Garnacho should start after retaining his bench role on Saturday.
Projected Eleven
Goalkeeper: Altay Bayindir
Defenders: Harry Amass, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans, Diogo Dalot
Midfielders: Casemiro, Toby Collyer, Bruno Fernandes
Attackers: Antony, Ethan Wheatley, Alejandro Garnacho
