Four Reds were in action for their countries today. Andre Onana got back on track with a clean sheet and Joshua Zirkzee scored his first international goal. Read on to find out how our players fared in their matches.
Joshua Zirkzee Nets First Goal for His Nation
Netherlands 5 Bosnia 2
Joshua Zirkzee has described himself as a “9.5.” He displayed qualities of both a 9 and a 10 in the Netherlands’ victory over Bosnia.
Joshua Zirkzee put his nation ahead in the 13th minute for his first goal for the Flying Dutchmen. In first-half stoppage time, the United striker played the role of playmaker, assisting Tijjani Reijnders. The Netherlands went on to score three more in a rampant attacking performance.
Zirkzee finished the day as the highest-rated player on the field with an 8.7 from Sofascore. On top of his goal and assist, he finished the day with four key passes and three big chances created.
Sadly, Matthijs De Ligt was the center of criticism after two mistakes for Bosnia’s goals. A positioning error led to the away side’s first goal, while he was caught ball-watching for the second.
This should be an anomaly for the 25-year-old, who is settling in well at Old Trafford.
Two Reds Feature in England’s Opening Win
England 2 Republic of Ireland 0
England started their Nations League campaign off with a win, as Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo started.
Harry Maguire returned to the side after missing the Euros and was very solid. The center-back had three clearances to go with an interception and a tackle.
Kobbie Mainoo was not at his best with ten turnovers but otherwise had a decent day. The 19-year-old will look to improve in the Three Lions’ next match against Finland.
Andre Onana Gets Back on Track With Clean Sheet
Cameroon 1 Namibia 0
After a rough few matches with Manchester United, Andre Onana claimed a clean sheet with his nation in AFCON Qualifiers against Namibia.
Onana made two saves in the win, helping his side start with three points in the group stages.
Vincent Aboubakar struck in the 65th minute to provide the Indomitable Lions the lone goal in the match.
