Three Reds were in action on the first day of the UEFA Nations League group stage. Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes started alongside star right-back Diogo Dalot, while Christian Eriksen started for Denmark.
Reds and Ex-Reds Lead Portugal to Victory
Portugal 2 Croatia 1
Portugal started quickly and the two current Reds in the side combined early to give their nation the advantage. Bruno Fernandes found Diogo Dalot, who had made a run into the box, and the right-back delivered a striker’s finish to put Portugal up 1-0 within seven minutes.
Former Red Cristiano Ronaldo doubled the lead with his 900th career goal before the first half finished.
Dalot would go on to score an unfortunate own goal, but Portugal pulled out a 2-1 victory to start the Nations League off right.
The performances of Fernandes and Dalot have left United fans wondering why they have not seen this kind of performance at club level yet this season. Fernandes was given a greater license to move and create, while Dalot was permitted to push high to create danger for the opposition.
Hopefully, Erik Ten Hag will look for ways to get both players into the positions they did against Croatia.
Denmark Pick Up Three Points Against Switzerland
Denmark 2 Switzerland 0
Christian Eriksen started and played 62 minutes for Denmark. The 32-year-old did not contribute to the scoresheet but had four shots with two on target and finished with a 6.86 rating from WhoScored.
Rasmus Hojlund should be available for Denmark in the next international window.
