Premier League all-time leading goalscorer Alan Shearer has sent Erik Ten Hag a warning after his side lost two of three to start the season.
Shearer, speaking to Betfair, warned, “Man United’s results will have to improve massively for Ten Hag to still be at the club at Christmas. A lot will depend on their next two results.”
“After the defeat to Brighton and the manner of defeat to Liverpool, if the team doesn’t see a massive improvement in the next game or two then it will be really, really difficult for him because the noise will only get louder.”
After a 1-0 win over Fulham, Manchester United lost 2-1 to Brighton and 3-0 to Liverpool.
Erik Ten Hag’s future at Manchester United was unclear for most of the summer, but the new club officials ultimately elected to extend the Dutch manager until 2026.
Despite Shearer’s warning, Dan Ashworth has repeatedly backed Ten Hag. In July, when Ten Hag was extended, Ashworth said, “While the club’s review of last season highlighted areas for improvement, it also reached a clear conclusion that Erik was the best partner for us to work with in driving up standards and outcomes.”
For now, Manchester United staff believe in Ten Hag, but if results continue to suffer, things could get awkward for the 54-year-old.
