The Manuel Ugarte Saga is coming to a close as Manchester United and PSG have agreed on an initial £42.2 million fee for the player. PSG could recoup the full £51 million they paid for Ugarte last summer if he completes certain performance milestones.
Ugarte becomes the fifth first-team signing and fills an immediate need next to Kobbie Mainoo. Casemiro has had a fine start to the season, but a younger, quicker defensive midfielder allows Kobbie Mainoo more freedom and can help better handle transition play.
The Uruguayan played 25 times in Ligue 1 last season, notching three assists. He played all but one minute at this summer’s Copa America through the semi-finals and scored the winning penalty against Brazil in the quarter-finals.
Scott McTominay, Sofyan Amrabat, and Donny Van De Beek exited this summer, creating space for Manchester United to bring in a top-quality midfielder. Ugarte has been the main target all summer and Manchester United will complete his transfer before the window closes.
Welcome to Manchester, Manuel Ugarte!
