Brentford striker Ivan Toney was left out of Thomas Frank’s Matchweek 1 squad, as he could be on his way out of the club. Frank confirmed this before kick-off when talking to Sky Sports. “A lot of things are going on with Ivan, especially with transfers, there’s a lot of transfer interest. Because of all that, we’ve decided not to include him in the squad,”

Despite Toney’s absence, the Bees grabbed three points at Selhurst Park behind goals from Bryan Mbuemo and Yoanne Wissa.

The England international has 36 Premier League goals in 85 appearances, including 20 during the 2022/2023 campaign. Toney also has a knack for creating chances for his teammates, as he has 61 assists throughout his career in all competitions.

Manchester United has been crying out for an experienced striker to lead the line and help the younger players grow. Rasmus Hojlund was forced to take the brunt of the load last season and had his ups and downs. Joshua Zirkzee has arrived this summer and already made his mark. However, he will be forced to acclimate quickly in Hojlund’s absence.

Ivan Toney could fill a gaping hole for the Reds. His arrival would allow Zirkzee and Hojlund time to develop before they eventually take over. If Manchester United can sign Toney and a defensive midfielder, then this first summer under Ineos would be massive in getting United closer to competing for a title.
