As the nervous energy built around Old Trafford, new striker Joshua Zirkzee found the back of the net, sending his new fans into raptures around the stands. It was the debut of dreams at the Theatre of Dreams, as the 23-year-old latched onto a cross from Alejandro Garnacho to give Manchester United all three points.
Erik Ten Hag’s side created chances but failed to find the back of the net for much of the match. Bruno Fernandes had two clear-cut opportunities to score but hit both at Fulham keeper Bernd Leno. Andre Onana came up with a good save on a Kenny Tete curling effort.
The away side threatened at times and probably believed that they were going to earn a point. But, unlike last season, Manchester United had a difference maker to bring on the pitch.
Seven touches into his first match, Joshua Zirkzee scored his first Manchester United goal at the Stretford End. After Bruno Fernandes shook off a tackle at midfield, Manchester United broke away. Alejandro Garnacho received the ball wide from a quick Casemiro pass, and the Argentine played an early ball in. Zirkzee latched onto the cross with a slick left-footed touch and placed the ball past the diving Leno. In the 87th minute, the Dutch striker came through for his new team. The goal was enough, and the Reds won in Matchweek 1 with a clean sheet.
Man of the Match: Joshua Zirkzee
In a post-match interview Joshua Zirkzee said this about scoring in his first match:
‘It couldn’t be better. I’ve been told [scoring at the Stretford End] is one of the best feelings at Manchester United. I’m so thankful and blessed I could experience it in my first game. It’s an amazing feeling.’
Well said, Joshua. Hopefully that is the first of many for you.
