Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho cemented their names on the team sheet for years to come with their breakout performances last season. Goals from these two young stars won the FA Cup for the Reds and showed just how promising the future is in Manchester. We could go on about the incredible 2023/2024 seasons from Mainoo and Garnacho, but who are the three breakthrough candidates who could follow in their footsteps this season?

Amad Diallo

Amad Diallo is becoming harder and harder for Erik Ten Hag to ignore. After loans at Rangers and Sunderland, the 22-year-old stayed with Manchester United last season and scored twice in twelve appearances. Despite flashes of quality, the Ivorian was not given a real opportunity. That is sure to change now.

Amad was brilliant during the pre-season tour and started the Community Shield for Ten Hag’s side. While Alejandro Garnacho stole the show from the wing against City, Amad was far more dangerous than Marcus Rashford and should start over the Englishman to begin the season.

Amad has all the quality needed for a 15 G/A season from the wing. As shown over the past month, his left foot is as dangerous as any, and he can cut in and score in a flash. A strong start to the season will give the winger a great chance for a breakout season.

Mason Mount

In the summer of 2023, Manchester United paid €64.2 million for Mason Mount. The former Chelsea Player of the Year had fallen out of favor at the club, and United believed that he could return to form at Old Trafford. However, his first season was filled with injuries, and he scored only once.

All Premier League fans know what Mason Mount is capable of. In the 2021/2022 season, the attacking midfielder scored eleven times and assisted ten goals for Chelsea in the league, establishing himself as a top talent.

If Mason Mount can return to form for the Reds, then he can ease the pressure on Bruno Fernandes. The United captain has effectively shouldered the weight over the past few seasons, but with United trying to make runs in four competitions, Mount could be integral to keeping Fernandes healthy and fresh.

If Mason Mount can bag 12 G/A or more for Erik Ten Hag in all competitions, the team as a whole will be making runs for silverware.

Harry Amass

Still just 17, Harry Amass showed his talent in pre-season as the only true left-back on tour. Against Liverpool, Amass shut down Mo Salah for much of the match and should have had an assist or two.

Last season, fans called for Amass to make his first-team debut during the club’s injury crisis. While that never materialized, the young left-back will get his opportunities this year, especially if injuries continue to hamper Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia.

At a minimum, Harry Amass will make a few Premier League appearances. If he breaks out, though, United fans will get to see the left-back of the future take hold of the position.
