The European Championships began with a bang as the hosts, Germany, beat Scotland 5-1. It was Germany’s biggest-ever win in the Euros and Scotland’s heaviest defeat.

The hosts were on top from the kickoff and were 2-0 up inside of 20 minutes. Young superstars Florian Wirtz (please, Ineos?) and Jamal Musiala each scored before Kai Havertz’s penalty just before the half. Substitutes Nicolas Fullkrug and Emre Can scored in the second half. Antonio Rudiger’s own goal was the only stain on an otherwise perfect performance.

Scott McTominay and Scotland would have hoped for a much better start. The United midfielder ended the match tied for the best rating on Scotland by Sofascore, but at 6.6, that is not saying a whole lot. With Switzerland and Hungary up next, the Tartan Terriers will need to regroup quickly to have any chance to advance to the knockout stages.

After today’s performance, should Germany be considered favorites to win the competition at home?
