Fan Highlights is a way for United Beyond Manchester to highlight the great fans of our beloved club. Every supporter is important, and we want to allow each one to have a voice, and share their special moments as a fan. All we do is ask the questions and the highlighted fan shares answers in their own words.
Our first ever Fan Highlight is Isaac Ferge from Uganda! You can find him on Twitter (X) at twitter.com/UtdFerge, or on Instagram at FergeUTD!
Questions:
Q. How did you become a Manchester United fan?
“I started supporting Manchester United in 2007. My elder brothers were football lovers, and one of them was a diehard Manchester United supporter. Back then, Arsenal were major rivals of the Reds. I loved United’s attacking football, and what inspired me the most was Cristiano Ronaldo.”
Q. What is your earliest Manchester United memory?
“My earliest Manchester United memory was the 2007 winning of the PL title. The match I will always remember was the 2-1 win against Arsenal, and I remember going out after the final whistle and attempting Ronaldo’s dribbling moves. It was just obsession, I guess!
Also, Manchester United’s 2008 season was another of my earliest memories. We won the Champions League trophy, and, of course, I was happy that we won! At the same time, I was a little disappointed that someone I followed most (Ronaldo) missed from the penalty spot in the shoot-out.”
Q. What is your favorite Manchester United memory and why?
“My favorite memory was the 2008 UCL trophy win, where Cristiano Ronaldo scored first, and Edwin Van der Sar saved late to force penalties. I was nervous after Cristiano Ronaldo missed his penalty, but relieved and excited when John Terry missed his. I was so happy to see my team lift the trophy and beat Chelsea in the thrilling penalty shoot-out.”
Q. Who is your favorite current Manchester United player and why?
“Before the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo, my favorite player was Bruno Fernandes. I have loved his ball-playing abilities since he signed. At times, his passing ability reminds me of Paul Scholes. But as of today, my favorite player is Kobbie Mainoo. I love how he moves with the ball, his control, his ability to curl the ball, and his composure. He’s an immaculate player and lovely to watch.”
Q. If you could bring one former player to the current team, who would it be and why?
“I would bring Wayne Rooney into our current side. He was versatile and was an incredible finisher. He showed fierce competitiveness on the pitch and always played for the love of the badge. I remember how well he used to play in rivalries and derbies, and he was a man scared of no one.”
Q. If you could sign one player for the club this summer, who would it be and why?
“If I could sign anyone, I would bring in Federico Valverde this summer. He is versatile, has a knack for scoring great goals, and is very competitive. He’s the type of player that I think we miss in our current team.”
Q. Where is your favorite place to watch matches? Who do you enjoy watching matches with the most?
“I watch many of the Manchester United matches on SuperSport Football. I have not yet had a chance to watch the Reds live at Old Trafford, but you never know, and I hope to one day!
My favorite place is Football Hall, and I enjoy watching Manchester United play with my young brother and my friends.”
Q. What else would you like fans to know about you or your love for the club?
I would like fans to know that I really love Manchester United, and I would love to connect with them to talk more about our team. Personally, I’ve never missed watching any Manchester United game irrespective of the situation I’m in. In 2019, before COVID-19, I broke my hand playing football and was admitted to the hospital. Whenever United was playing I asked my attendants to take me to a nearby place where I could watch the game. I love Manchester United, and it’s a team I dream of watching play live. GGMU!
