Amad Diallo’s winning goal will go down as one of the great moments against Liverpool. As he came on as a late substitute, it looked like his coming on was going to be too little too late. Then, Antony forced extra time with a great finish and allowed Amad a chance to grab his moment. Below, we look into the legendary goal that immediately turns Amad Diallo into a cult hero.
It happened to United against Wolves. Manchester United got caught out on a corner and allowed a fast break goal to Pedro Neto to level the game. Thankfully, Kobbie Mainoo saved the Reds that day with a late, late winner.
This time, Manchester United stole a goal from Liverpool’s corner as the away side’s set piece turned into Amad Diallo’s moment.
The corner came in and found its way to the edge of the box after an initial clearance from Scott McTominay. Neither Wataru Endo nor Harvey Elliot were able to control the ball, and Amad took his chance and won it. This moment of indecision from the Liverpool midfielders was costly, as they only had one defender back behind them.
Amad’s touch forward fell to Alejandro Garancho, who immediately pushed on with pace. Garnacho had it in his mind the whole time to pass to Amad, and his burst forward took Conor Bradley’s attention and ensured that Amad had space after the ball was laid off to him.
As the ball found the Ivorian winger’s feet, Conor Bradley closed him down after moving from Garnacho. Amad looked as if he might lose out, but a slight hesitation bought him the space to shoot. It was a quick hesitation move, and Conor Bradley could not catch up before Amad’s shot.
Amad Diallo still had it all to do as he hit the ball with his left foot. The finish was precise and found the only spot where Kelleher could not save it. The ball rattled against the post and rolled into the back of the net as the Old Trafford faithful erupted into a frenzy.
The hero of the day took off his shirt and held it up in celebration as teammates jumped on him. Consequently, Amad was sent off for a second yellow and will miss the next match. While that seems harsh, the winning goal is all that really matters to the team and club.
Amad Diallo has not received many minutes from Erik Ten Hag this season. Will this be the breakthrough moment that he needs to kickstart his Manchester United career?
